GP practices become 'dementia friendly'

Two practices in Castle Point and Rochford have recently been accredited as ‘dementia friendly’.

Oaklands Surgery (Canvey) and Wakering Medical Centre (Great Wakering) were delighted to receive the accreditation for being ‘dementia friendly’ from Wessex Academic Science Network (AHSN).

This achievement comes after both the GP surgeries implemented the iSPACE project; an innovative model for dementia friendly primary care, funded and managed by AHSN.

The project is designed to improve the patient experience by delivering a set of key improvements in dementia care.
GPs and staff from Oaklands Surgery and Wakering Medical Centre undertook dementia awareness training and put several key steps in place to support dementia patients and their carers / families.

As a result of the work undertaken, both surgeries now have:

  • An identified a dementia champion
  • Established partnership working with carers and families of dementia patients
  • Implemented patient centred care plans for dementia patients
  • A surgery where the environment is kept as dementia friendly as possible.

Dr Kashif Siddiqui for NHS Castle Point and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Dr Jose Garcia-Lobera CCG said:

“Many congratulations to Oaklands Surgery and Wakering Medical Centre on this accreditation. They join Pall Mall Surgery (Southend) who became the first surgery in south east Essex to be accredited as ‘dementia friendly’ earlier this year.

These practices have shown a real commitment to making themselves ‘dementia friendly’ and we hope that other practices in the area will follow in the future.
